PHP for Web Designers
PHP for Web Designers is a video training course in the lynda.com Online Training Library that offers a gentle, yet practical introduction to adding dynamic features to a website using PHP. One of the main features of the course is that it doesn't assume prior knowledge of PHP or programming concepts. Everything is explained in straightforward language, and each concept is first illustrated with a simple example that involves writing only a few lines of code.
But simply working through code examples doesn't give any real idea of how PHP can be applied in a practical way. (It's boring, too.) So, the course takes an existing website created in static HTML, and gradually shows how to add dynamic features to it. The course uses an attractively designed website for a fictitious floral design company called Hansel and Petal.
The Hansel and Petal site is built using HTML5 and up-to-date CSS techniques, so using it as a case study adds a high level of realism to the course. By following the videos and accompanying files, you'll learn how to do the following:
- Move the header, navigation menu, and footer to external files to improve maintenance.
- Fix problems with internal links in external files.
- Display different text and images depending on the month or season.
- Process and display information from an online form.
- Query a database, and display the results.
- Display a product information page by drawing details from a database.
The following sample video shows how to submit a query to a database and display an error message if anything goes wrong.
Although the course begins gently, it becomes progressively challenging, facing you with real-world situations. Each video is devoted to a single subject, making it easy to return to a specific topic if you need to refresh your memory.
The course concludes with a chapter devoted to the most frequently encountered errors in PHP scripts, and explains how to deal with them.
