New extension to convert colours to RGBA

CSS3 offers a new way to define colours: RGBA. This extends the RGB (red, green, blue) colour model to include alpha transparency. Unfortunately, RGBA does not accept hexadecimal values for colours. So, I have created a free Dreamweaver extension that converts from hexadecimal (or the 17 named colours) to RGBA. It’s free, and can be downloaded from the Tools page on this site.

i have a question about your smart link extension. I can get ti to work fine in Firefox but not IE 8
    Any suggestions?

  2. David Powers says:

I have just done a quick test in IE8. It works fine. There’s probably something else causing the problem. I suggest that you run your page through the W3C Validator to make sure there are no errors in your code.

  3. Hi David,

I just installed your extension, very handy, thanks for supplying it. Is there also a way (besides Live View) to make Dw show the RGBA colours in Design View?

  4. David Powers says:

No, I don’t think there is any way other than Live View. I imagine it’s something that Adobe will target for the next version of Dreamweaver. The web development scene is changing more quickly than it has done for several years, so I expect the Dreamweaver engineers will be kept very busy in the coming months and years.

  5. :) not only the Dreamweaver engineers but also the developers!

  6. Hi David,

After (again) having problems with Dreamweaver CS5, this time it kept getting stuck while starting up, I found your post on the Adobe forum about the Dreamweaver update http://forums.adobe.com/thread/629224
I just installed it and the problem I had is finally solved, so thanks for the tip. But… to my surprise, now I do see the RGBA colours in design view. Not with their transparency though, only with 100% opacity, but nevertheless a step forward!

  7. David Powers says:

Yes. If you follow the link to the page, it tells you that it’s compatible with CS3 to CS5.

  8. @David your great!

  9. fontotinta says:

have ie6 the support css3 and rgba values?

  10. David Powers says:

No, IE6 was released in 2001 before work even began on most aspects of CSS3.

  11. trucco occhi says:

    is compatible with mx version?

  12. David Powers says:

No, it’s not compatible with Dreamweaver MX. If you follow the link to the extension, you’ll see it’s for Dreamweaver CS3 to CS5. It’s not required for CS5.5, because the latest version of Dreamweaver now has support for rgba() and hsla().
