Spry updater finally available for Dreamweaver CS3

October 2nd, 2007

At long last, Adobe has created an extension to update the version of Spry in Dreamweaver CS3. You can download the extension by going to the Spry section of Adobe Labs. The extension is free, but to obtain it, you need to log into Labs using your Adobe ID. If you don’t already have an Adobe ID, it’s easy to create an account (also free).

Use the Extension Manager to install the Spry Updater for Dreamweaver CS3. When you first launch Dreamweaver after installation, you’ll be presented with a dialog box explaining how the updater works. It lets you update the Spry library files on existing sites, and gives you the option to replace all files or just those that you want to change. And if anything goes wrong, you can retrieve the old files from a backup folder.

The extension updates the Spry files to version 1.6 (the version that shipped with CS3 was 1.4), and adds code hints for the new features. However it does not add any new features to the Dreamweaver interface. To use the new features in Spry 1.6, you need to hand-code them yourself.

David… I’m at MAX and sending people to your site to download the comment stripper extension … Only someone just made me aware that the file is unavailable. :) Are you working on it? Revising it? Putting it back? Or should I not mention it anymore. LOL

    Ciao,
    Stef.

    Hi Steph,

Sorry about that. I moved servers recently, and the filepath was wrong in the download page. It’s all fixed now. The script can be downloaded from http://foundationphp.com/tools/css_comments.php.

Hello, I am with the San Antonio Office of Emergency Management and have been working on a website to help promote our emergency preparedness efforts for the city. We have been using CS3, designing the site using layers and utilizing the Spry widgets to create a menu for the site. We are very happy with the site and the ease of the program, I am new to web design and everything seemed to be going great.

We have seemed to run into a snag with the Spry menu not functioning properly in IE6, works great in IE7. Any thoughts, will this Spry 1.6 resolve this issue? I have found no help, via forums or Adobe, on this issue. PLEEEAAASSSEEE HELP. We are so close.

Thanks for listening, I hope you can help.

    Chris

I have no idea if it will fix your problem. “Not functioning correctly” isn’t a very helpful description. The Spry menu does work straight out of the box in IE6, so it sounds as though you have modified it in some way. Still, the Spry updater is free. It’s easy to install, and it creates a backup of your old Spry files, so you have nothing to lose by giving it a try. Perhaps you have plenty to gain.

If it doesn’t solve your problem, I suggest you post details again in the Adobe forum. Be as specific as possible about what happens in IE6, and - most important of all - post a link to the problem page/site. The only way to solve website problems is by examining the code.

    Hi David,
This is slightly off-topic. I own a few of your books and have been very pleased with them. I am in the process of re-writing a couple sites that had been maintained with Drupal, modelling after the designs in your book. Now to my question, I like the calendar you have on your site and was curious if your books cover how this was done? I need to add an events calendar to a couple of my sites and was curious if this was covered in any of your PHP books?

    Thanks.

Chris, the blog part of my site is powered by WordPress. I can’t claim any credit for it whatsoever. :(

I experimented briefly with Drupal, but don’t remember seeing a calendar module - although you might find one on the Drupal site. There seem to be modules for everything there. It’s just a question of finding the one you want - as long as you have the time and patience to search for it. :)

    Hi David,
I’ve been itching to buy your new book (Dreamweaver CS3 with…), but I’m curious as to why you chose not to devote a bit of space to jQuery.

Spry looks promising, but jQuery seems to have quite a following at the moment. Any thoughts?

There are two reasons my Dreamweaver CS3 book concentrates on Spry rather than jQuery.

    1. Spry is integrated directly into Dreamweaver CS3. At the click of a button, you can insert an accordion or validation widget, and control most of the settings through the Dreamweaver Property inspector. You can’t do that with jQuery.

    2. There are only so many hours in a day. Writing a 750-page book is very time consuming. Although I have experimented with jQuery, and found it very impressive, I don’t know enough about it to devote a section of a book to it. Of course, if a future version of Dreamweaver adds support for jQuery (or any other third-party feature), and I’m still writing, I’ll definitely cover it in one of my books.

If you’re looking for a book on jQuery, though, Learning jQuery by Karl Sweberg and Jonathan Chaffer is very good.

Thanks for the link to the jQuery book. That ought come in handy after I’ve finished reading your new book and tinkering a bit with Tripoli.
